Where to Eat Vegan in Camiguin

by - May 03, 2019

Ah, Camiguin. One of my most favorite destinations ever. Aside from the many activities that can be done here – from beach-bumming to hiking – there’s also a number of vegan-friendly places within its folds. It’s the first province I’ve visited where I didn't have to worry about where and what to eat.

So, should you come and visit the Island Born of Fire for your own #PlantPoweredAdventures, here are some places and plant-based eats to check out. (There’s still a couple of places that apparently offers vegan dishes, but I have yet to try them. Will update once I do.)

My friend Kara’s first words, upon setting foot in here were “This is so you,” which I took as a huge compliment. This modest restaurant is a hippie’s haven, and I being a hippie, feels right at ease in this place.

From a local word that loosely translates to “relaxed” or “at peace”, the restaurant is tucked on one side of the island’s main thoroughfare, right next to Treasures Camiguin where you can get beautiful sea glass jewelry. Decorated with colored glass bottles, and other kitschy thingamabobs, plus laidback seating complete with poufs and throw pillows, Hayahay definitely lives up to its name.

Their menu, meanwhile, focuses on mostly whole and superfoods. On my next visit to Camiguin, I promise to allot an entire afternoon to just hang out here, filling myself up with their hearty dishes.

Kurma is the second avatar of the Hindu deity Vishnu, depicted usually as having turtle-like qualities. And specializing in freediving services, the lodge couldn’t have picked a more appropriate (and conversation-starter) name.

With a prime beachside location, dining in Kurma is as chill as one can get. The sound of the ocean plus wholesome food? I’m in!

Aside from the delicious grub, Kurma also holds regular sunset yoga sessions. So if you have time to spare, you might wanna check that out.

From the Spanish word meaning “Female Warrior”, Chef Carmel over at Guerrera is fighting for sustainable food. The hotel-cum-restaurant has an ever-changing menu, depending on what’s available. One thing is for certain, however: the strong Asian influence – from Vietnamese to Thai to local Camiguin flavors.

While also offering non-vegan dishes, most items on the menu can be veganized. The staff also knows what is in the food, down to the most minute of ingredients – a rare thing here in the Philippines! They would even suggest dishes that would fit your lifestyle and your palette.

Situated amongst the island’s rice paddies, Guerrera feels somewhat removed from the rest of Camigun’s hullabaloo. Make no mistake, however, the place is classy and chic – all burnished wood and cozy ambiance.
